Label boss Calm Stiege christens Funky Adjacent with its inaugural release. The 2020 winner of the Point Blank and Resident Advisor music scholarship exhibits how he has advanced as a producer with the ‘Dance Classes’ EP, drawing inspiration from jazz, house, and the old school UK funky sounds that reigned supreme in the late noughties.

On this project, the South-East Londoner delivers five dance tracks with their own distinct identities, exploring the sounds that the Funky Adjacent collective has been celebrating on its AAJA Music radio show, as well as in a spate of successful parties held throughout 2023.

Opening track ‘Amarish’ marries lilting chords with deep, rhythmic drums, beckoning the listener to sway along. In titular track ‘Dance Class’, salsa-tinged horn stabs are layered over drums which stomp like feet on the dancefloor.

Cowbell and cymbal-focused ‘Lion Bar Riddim’ careens wonkily between chromatic arpeggios, while ‘Cushion Dance’ provides a woozy joyride through ricocheting drums, euphoric square waves and coughing sounds.

‘Logging On’ fuses amapiano log drums with loose synths, swung whistles and flutes, to provide an exciting addition to UK funky for the new age.
